Fortune Reading
For thousands of years, people have looked to the sky to understand life. Three distinct traditions remain widely practiced today: Western Astrology, Four Pillars of Destiny (BaZi) & Vedic Astrology. Heaven’s Cipher brings them together, explains where their methods agree or differ, and presents each view in clear, modern English.
Chemistry isn’t luck. Heaven’s Cipher reads birth charts together through three systems — Western Astrology, Vedic Astrology & Four Pillars of Destiny (BaZi) — and shows where you click, where you clash, and what helps a bond last. Add up to six people.

Learn · The Two Zodiacs
Short answer: neither chart made a mistake. Western astrology and Vedic astrology lay two different zodiacs over the same sky — one fixed to the seasons, one fixed to the stars — and Earth’s slow wobble has drifted them about 24 degrees apart. When your birthday falls inside that gap, your sign changes from one system to the other.
The tropical zodiac, used by Western astrology, anchors the start of Aries to the March equinox — the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere. Its ruler is the seasons. The Greek astronomer Ptolemy set this framework down as the standard in the 2nd century CE, and Western astrology has used it ever since.
The sidereal zodiac, used by Vedic astrology, anchors the start of Aries to the fixed stars instead. Its ruler is the star field itself. When Ptolemy wrote, the two rulers nearly agreed — the equinox point still sat close to the star-based start of Aries. They have been separating ever since.
Vedic astrology also uses tools the Western system does not: it divides the zodiac into 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions) for finer detail, and it times life chapters with planetary periods called dashas. So a Vedic chart is not just a Western chart with the signs shifted — it is a different instrument, measuring with a different ruler.
Earth spins like a top, and like a top, it wobbles. The gravity of the Sun and the Moon tugs on the slight bulge around Earth’s equator, and the planet’s axis slowly traces a circle in the sky. One full wobble takes about 26,000 years.
The drift is tiny — about 50 arcseconds a year, roughly one degree every 72 years. Nobody can see it move in a lifetime. But give it two thousand years and it adds up to almost a whole zodiac sign.
We know about the wobble because someone caught it early. Around 130 BCE, the Greek astronomer Hipparchus compared his own star measurements against records made roughly 150 years before his time and found the stars had shifted by about 2 degrees against the equinox points. He concluded that the equinox points themselves are sliding slowly westward, and he put the rate at no less than one degree per century. The true rate is a bit faster — about 1.4 degrees per century — but he had found the right motion without a telescope: just old records, geometry, and patience.
The measured angle between the two zodiacs on any given date is called the ayanamsa. Different schools use slightly different values. The most widely used is the Lahiri ayanamsa, and on January 1, 2026 it stood at 24°13′19″. The last time the two zodiacs roughly coincided is conventionally dated to about 285 CE; they have been drifting apart at that same 50-arcseconds-a-year crawl ever since, and they still are.
A sign is exactly 30 degrees wide. So picture your Sun’s position inside its Western sign:
That is the whole mystery. Your Vedic sign is usually one sign earlier because the sidereal ruler starts about 24 degrees behind the tropical one, and 24 out of 30 lands most birthdays one sign back.
| Western Astrology (tropical) | Vedic Astrology (sidereal) | |
|---|---|---|
| Anchored to | The seasons — 0° Aries = the March equinox | The fixed stars and constellations |
| Standard set by | Ptolemy, 2nd century CE | Indian tradition; Lahiri ayanamsa is the most common modern standard |
| Effect of precession | Signs stay fixed to the seasons and drift away from the constellations | Signs stay fixed to the constellations; the gap is corrected by the ayanamsa |
| Extra tools | — | 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions), dasha life periods |
| Your Sun sign | The sign you probably already know | Usually one sign earlier, if your Sun is in the first ~24° of its Western sign |
Every few years the same headline catches fire: “NASA has changed your zodiac sign.” It is not true, and it never was. In 2016, NASA’s Space Place — an education website for children — posted a page about constellations and the calendar. It explained that the Babylonians, who built the 12-sign zodiac roughly 3,000 years ago, knew the Sun’s path crosses 13 constellations, and that to fit their 12-month calendar they left one out: Ophiuchus. The page also noted that the sky has shifted since then because of the wobble.
News outlets stripped out the context. NASA had to correct the record, in words worth quoting exactly: “We didn’t change any Zodiac signs, we just did the math.”
Is Ophiuchus real? As a constellation, yes — the Sun genuinely crosses it for about 18 days a year, while it crosses the constellation Scorpius in only about a week. The real constellations are uneven like that; their official borders were only drawn in 1928 by the International Astronomical Union. But a sign is not a constellation. A sign is one of 12 equal slices of the ecliptic, each exactly 30 degrees. There is no empty slice waiting for a 13th sign — in either zodiac.
Heaven’s Cipher computes your chart all three ways — Western Astrology, Vedic Astrology, and Four Pillars of Destiny (BaZi) — and cross-checks them in one plain-English reading, so the places where your signs differ stop looking like contradictions and start looking like information.

No. The two systems are two different rulers laid over the same sky. The Western (tropical) ruler is anchored to the seasons; the Vedic (sidereal) ruler is anchored to the constellations. Each is internally consistent — they simply start measuring from different zero points, which today sit about 24 degrees apart.
Because the gap between the two zodiacs (about 24 degrees) is a little less than one full sign (30 degrees). If a planet sits in the first 24 degrees of its Western sign, subtracting the gap pushes it back into the previous sign. Only planets in the last 6 degrees or so of a Western sign keep the same sign in the sidereal zodiac.
Ayanamsa is the name for the measured angle between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs on a given date. Different schools use slightly different values. The most widely used, the Lahiri ayanamsa, was 24 degrees 13 minutes on January 1, 2026, and it grows by about 50 arcseconds a year as precession continues.
No. In 2016 a NASA education page for children explained that the Babylonians built a 12-sign calendar even though the Sun’s path crosses 13 constellations, and that the sky has shifted since. News coverage turned that into a claim that NASA had changed the zodiac. NASA’s reply: “We didn’t change any Zodiac signs, we just did the math.” A sign is one of 12 equal 30-degree slices; a constellation is an uneven star picture — the two are not interchangeable.
